How to Use Kojic Acid Powder?
Kojic acid in cosmetics
1. Preliminary preparation
Check quality control: Use pharmaceutical grade kojic acid powder (at least 99% pure) to avoid impurities that may cause skin irritation.
pH adjustment: Dissolve the powder in distilled water or ethanol at 40-50°C (avoid boiling to prevent decomposition). The optimal stability pH is 4.0-6.0; citric acid or sodium hydroxide can be used to adjust the pH.
2. Preparation methods for different cosmetic products
Oil and cream
. Emulsion preparation: Mix the oil phase (shea butter, jojoba oil) and the water phase (kojic acid solution, glycerin) separately at 70°C.
. Emulsification: Slowly add the oil phase to the water phase and homogenize at 2000 rpm for 5 minutes.
. Cooling and storage: Cool to 40°C, add denaturant (0.1% phenoxyethanol), and shake for 30 minutes. Recommended dosage: 0.5-2% (too high concentration may cause dehydration; please test on a small area of skin before use).
Essence and toner
.Solvent selection: Use 50% propylene glycol or 30% ethanol for better solubility in aqueous solutions.
.Improved stability: Add 0.1% EDTA as a chelating agent to prevent ionic contamination.
.Directions: Apply 2-3 drops daily to clean skin, avoiding the eye area.
How Kojic Acid is used in foods?
1. Food additives (approved for use in Japan)
Storage of soybeans: The addition of 0.05% kojic acid powder can prevent mold growth during storage.
Seafood: Soaking fish or shellfish in 0.1% kojic acid for 10 minutes can extend shelf life for 2-3 days.
pH should be considered: Works well in ambient conditions (pH < 5.5); for non-acidic foods, citric acid can be used for preparation.
2. Change in taste of fermented foods
For making beverages: The addition of 0.02% kojic acid during mash fermentation can help build amino acids, thus improving umami.
Making yogurt: Adding 0.01% kojic acid can improve stability and slow acidification.
A note of caution: Be sure to follow local regulations regarding food packaging; many countries continue to classify kojic acid as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) pending the results of long-term studies.
Pharmaceutical applications of kojic acid
1. Advances in the treatment of fungal infections
Prophylaxis: Mix 1-3% Kojic Acid Cream with 2% Miconazole to treat tinea versicolore.
Mechanism of action: It interferes with ergosterol synthesis on fungal cell membrane and improves drug permeability.
2. Applications in Cancer Research (In Vitro/Animal Studies)
Test concentration: 50-200 µM in cell culture; 10-50 mg/kg intraperitoneally.
Note: Limited human clinical trials; work only under medical supervision.
