Minoxidil 99% is a vasodilator medication known for its ability to slow or stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth. It is available over the counter for treatment of androgenic alopecia, among other baldness treatments, but measurable changes disappear within months after discontinuation of treatment. Its effectiveness has largely been demonstrated in younger men (18 to 41 years of age), the younger the better, and in those with balding in the central (vertex) portion of the scalp.

A hair follicle's life cycle consists of three phases: growth, catagen, and resting. Androgenic alopecia (commonly known as seborrheic alopecia) can dramatically shorten the growth phase. Minoxidil opens potassium channels and reduces calcium influx, forcing hair follicles back into the growth phase, effectively extending the lifespan of hair.

Dissolving the powder in water and applying it topically can increase scalp blood flow by over 30%, delivering more oxygen, amino acids, and trace elements to the dermal papilla, allowing fine, soft vellus hairs to gradually grow into thicker, terminal hairs.

Studies have shown that minoxidil powder can also upregulate vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and prostaglandin synthase-1, directly stimulating cell proliferation.

Twelve months of topical application of 5% minoxidil in men increased hair density by an average of 18.6 hairs/cm²; eight months of topical application of 2% minoxidil in women increased hair density on the crown of the head by approximately 10 hairs/cm². It's also effective for alopecia areata. Topical application of 3% minoxidil powder solution to alopecia areata patients can achieve an efficacy rate of over 60% within six months. Combining it with microneedling or glucocorticoids offers even greater results.
